The inaugural debate will feature New York Times investigative journalist Ian Urbina, discussing the upcoming decision by the The European Commission on Thailand’s IUU(illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) fishing status.

As a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Thailand is a strategic partner for the European Union in trade, investments, and cooperation.

However, negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement have stalled since the Thai political crisis of 2014, which led to the formation of a military junta that has compromised the legitimate democratic process, rule of law, and respect of human rights.

Through trade sanctions and political pressure, the EU has a role in pushing for democratic reforms and for a democratically elected government. In a high-profile procedure in April 2015, the European Commission issued a Yellow Card to Thailand for not taking sufficient measures against illegal, unreported or unregulated (IUU) fishing and non-respect of international labour conventions.
