Read legal opinion on Germany’s implementation of import controls under the Regulation

Date: February 15, 2017

A leading German environmental lawyer has analysed Germany’s implementation of ambitious EU legislation on stopping imports of illegal fish, and found it is in breach of the requirements to scrutinise catch documentation to identify potentially high-risk consignments.

Given Germany’s position as one of the top importers of fishery products in the EU, and the fact that most of the imports arrive in containers and are frozen processed fillets which are more difficult to identify, this presents serious cause for concern that Germany is a weak link in the chain aimed at closing the EU market to illegal fish.
